We are Western Canada's only full contact jousting group.

Jouster Feature: Jordan Heron

Being fascinated by history from a very early age, Jordan Heron started his medieval reenactment journey in 1978, eventually leading to taking up the sport of jousting late in the last millennium. Since then, Jordan has had the honour and privilege to joust with and against some of the best in the world, in seven countries on three continents: from Canada and the USA, to New Zealand and multiple tournaments in Europe.

Having retired from jousting in 2015, over nine years ago, Jordan is appearing in Vegreville due to his long standing love of STALC and the fact that he’s very bad at saying no.

Come and see Jordan jousting this weekend at the Vegreville Medieval Faire & Artisan Market. Located at the Vegreville Agricultural Grounds.

Training season will be starting up soon, once the mud dries up. It's crucial for both horses and riders to shake off those winter cob webs and be ready for the summer jousting season. Even though we ride throughout the winter, full jousting practices are done regularly before the season starts.

This photo from last year shows how we teach our horses how to walk past a fully armoured knight on the ground safely. It's important to train with our horses, riders, and ground crew so we are all knowledgeable and safe.

Diamond came to the Freehold Farm back in 2013 at three years old, and was privately boarded on the farm until August 2021, when squire Ashe Cutler purchased him. In his life before the farm, Diamond was in training to become a cow horse, but didn't quite make the cut and ended up in auction. After a couple years of training, he debuted as a Skill at Arms horse with Ashe in 2023. He is incredibly kind natured and is one of the littlest warriors in the group.

Alongside childhood bestie Brook Bohning, Lori has excelled at honing her skills on horseback and with weapons since 2007. What started as a cool thing became a passion and a want to do more. With the help of Brook and others, Avacal Equestrian came to be, bringing the equestrian program to western Canada within the Society for Creative Anachronism (SCA).

In 2018, with her husband Brad they also created Smith’s Mounted Medieval Clinics to be able to offer a taste of skill at arms to the public in a safe and enjoyable way. 2018 was a year of change as along with running clinics she finally met Radar, (yay!) and riding with her in 2019 it seemed only natural to join STALC for future endeavours.

When not swinging swords from horseback and telling people what to do… she runs a small farm in central Alberta with two kids, a loving husband, an assortment of horses, cats, dogs and a whack of goats.

Stephen married into the group in 2015 and was immediately put to work. His hobbies include officiating for Canadian Bobsleigh and Canadian Track and Field associations, so it seemed a natural fit for him to help as a judge on the jousting field. You can see Stephen with his pad of paper noting scores and keeping his keen eyes on the knights making sure their hits are legal.
